Ron Hawley

Sadly, one of our founder members is no longer with us. Ron passed away on the 7th of February 2008 at the age of 73. His passing was announced on the official Clyde forum and in the following match programme...

"With sadness, I am posting to inform forum members that Ron Hawley passed away in the early hours of this morning.

As one of the exiles, Ron was always online every Saturday morning (Maryland time) and I’m certain I speak for all of us in saying that in spite of the virtual setting of our gatherings, we had come to hold a great deal of affection for him. Very much the father figure of the group, our commentary on the game in progress was frequently interspersed with anecdotes from games in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Anecdotes which he often, needlessly, apologised for.

Ron left Scotland in the late 1960’s, and though he returned on occasions, he expressed sentiments that things were never the same. I expect it’s the experience of every emigrant, that the country you leave behind moves on without you. Those he’d stood with on the terracing at Shawfield were all gone, but through this forum and the exiles, he became as much a part of the current generation of Clyde fans as he had been back then. So, he was persuaded back for what would turn out to be the last time and met some of us before the Challenge Cup Final. A memory I will cherish long after I’ve forgotten the score.

It was a privilege indeed to have known him."
